Why is RUN FOR DAD Important?
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 241,000 cases of prostate cancer reported in 2012. About 34,000 men will die from the disease this year. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men behind only lung cancer.
One man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime. And one man in 35 will die of this disease. More than 2 million men in the United States who have had prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.
African American men have the highest incidence rate for prostate cancer in the United States and are more than twice as likely as White men to die from the disease. Outreach to the African American men and their families are a key component of RUN FOR DAD.
The annual RUN FOR DAD is a community and family event of the American Cancer Society (ACS) designed to raise awareness about prostate cancer in men and to highlight the importance of screening and early detection. A small group of prostate cancer survivors, ACS staff, concerned health care professionals and other community and corporate activists manage the event. All proceeds go to support prostate cancer research projects and other prostate cancer awareness activities.
