Get checked for cancer. Screening can prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest, most treatable stage. 

Aim for a healthy body weight and eat a well balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Limit your consumption of red meats, especially high-fat and processed meats.

Commit to walking 10,000 steps per day. Simple things like parking further away from the door or taking the stairs at work will help meet these goals.

Learn what your Body Mass Index (BMI) is, it will help your health care provider determine your ideal weight for your height.

Encourage family and friends to take part in the Great American Eat Right Challenge this month.

Recruit friends and family to join and encourage them to visit www.acscan.org/ to learn about the latest campaigns.

Show the ACS CAN recruitment video which highlights the importance of membership in this organization. Ask any advocacy staff partner for a copy of the video.

Cancer Awareness Month

Making Strides Against Cancer
Get involved in our premier breast cancer awareness and fundraising event.

Make a personal commitment to learn about breast cancer screening options and guidelines.

Make a mammogram appointment and encourage a friend or family member who needs one to do the same.

Learn about Reach to Recovery, a peer-to-peer support program for those facing breast cancer.

Enroll in the Sister Study, a lifesaving research effort, if your sister has had a diagnosis of breast cancer. (Enrollment ends December 2007.)

Visit www.asccan.org/makingstrides to take action to increase funding for the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program by visiting .

Get involved in this effort by committing to Livefree.Smokefree. and break the smoking chain.

Encourage your workplace to become smoke-free.

Talk to your children and grandchildren about the dangers of tobacco use.

Learn about the risks associated with exposure to second hand smoke and support local clean indoor air policies.

Offer support to a loved one who is trying to quit tobacco.

Celebrating Success
Become part of Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). If you are 30 to 65 years old and have no personal history of cancer, you can enroll in this lifesaving cancer research study.

Tell everyone you know about CPS-3 and how it is a one-time, historic opportunity to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Invite a local American Cancer Society-funded researcher to attend our local Relay For Life and share his or her story about the fight against cancer.  

Join the mailing list for the Progress newsletter, which shares information about American Cancer Society research efforts and progress in the fight against cancer.
